Giving treats to your dog is something that most owners like doing, and believe me, dogs love getting them too.
When you are in the store looking for a package of treats for your dog, keep in mind that not all of them are healthy or beneficial for your dog to eat. Since they will be happy with eating almost anything, pick treats that are healthy as well.
Keeping this in mind, it is up to you, the owner to make sure that the stuff your dog is eating is healthy for them. One way to make sure is to watch your dog eat the treat and make sure they don’t have any adverse effects to the food.
Some treats clean teeth while the dog is eating them. Greenies are an example of this line of treats. They have been known to cause choking from time to time, so if you have an older dog or a small one, keep an eye on them and make sure they are okay.
The next popular line of treats are the rawhide ones. Dogs love these because they can gnaw at them while they are eating. Not only that, but they also do wonders in cleaning their teeth too. But, they can also lead to choking.
Keep in mind that a lot of the treats that are out there are imported, and are subject to looser regulations than those manufactured in the United States. One area of concern is that a preservative used in some of these imports actually contains arsenic.
Unlike people, dogs as well as cats do not react well to chocolate, and it is very toxic for them to eat. Keep chocolate away from them, and keep in mind that they may be eating them when you are not looking. Especially at times when there are a lot of sweets in the home, try and keep them out of reach from your pets.
Chocolate reacts to dogs in ways that caffeine does to people. They will get hyperactive and then crash, in addition to getting an upset stomach. One thing to keep in mind is that too much chocolate can actually kill your dog.
