One of the biggest challenges for cat owners is getting your feline to drink enough. A drinking for felines should be strictly water. Human drinks like milk, coffee, tea and soda can actually make them sick.
When cats do not drink enough they can become dehydrated leading to urinary tract infections, kidney and bladder issues and causing severe issues that can shorten their lives.
Encouraging drinking can become frustrating to owners, but it need not be. There are very easy ways to get your cat to enjoy drinking. Here are only a few ideas that will have your cats lining up for water!
Get a pet fountain. Cats enjoy the noise, watching the water move and they just cannot help trying it out themselves. The best fountains are made from ceramic.
Which leads into the next point. Throw out your plastic bowls. Plastic causes feline acne, can leave odd tastes in their water and can leach toxins as well. This means you may want to throw plastic away for humans too. We both benefit from glass, ceramic or stainless steel materials.
Does your cat come running when you turn the faucet on? Let her have a treat by allowing her to drink directly from the faucet.
Have you ever tried adding ice cubes to the cats water? My cats love to bat the cubes around and drink from their paws. It turns into a great game and gets all of my kitties involved. They are always surprised by the crackling of the ice in the water.
Place water bowls in various locations throughout the house. Sometimes cats simply do not like the placement or are uncomfortable with noises or distractions in certain areas of the house.
Cleanliness is a priority. Bowls easily grow bacteria which can lead to illness for kitty or even you!
Add water to any wet food you feed. Cats love the soupy stuff
Remember that you are your cat’s guardian so you need to observe even small changes in your cat’s behavior. These can point to early warning signs of illness and will warrant a trip to your trusted vet.
